Carved Lacquer Incense Container “Flower”Uesugi Gakusui

To create an effect of gradation from black to purple and from purple to white, this container in a shape of lotus flower was carved in 160 layers of coloured urushi lacquer. Gold flakes were sprinkled over the top.
